Advancing Design Education Through Inquiry, Innovation & Reflection.
My scholarship of teaching and learning explores how research-informed pedagogy, emerging technologies, and experiential learning can strengthen graphic design education. Through instructional innovation, assessment, reflection, and professional dissemination, I develop approaches that connect creative inquiry with contemporary professional practice.
Educational Research & Dissemination
Sharing Approaches to Creative Pedagogy
My contributions to design education extend beyond the classroom through conference presentations and the dissemination of instructional approaches. These activities provide opportunities to share pedagogical knowledge, engage with other educators, and contribute to discussions about experiential and research-informed design education.
Educational Resources & Knowledge Sharing
Expanding Access to Design Knowledge
Developing educational resources extends my commitment to accessible, research-informed design education. This work translates disciplinary knowledge, professional practice, and emerging developments into resources that support independent inquiry and lifelong learning.
Evidence-Informed Pedagogical Development
Translating Professional Learning into Instructional Improvement
My instructional practice evolves through an ongoing process of inquiry, experimentation, assessment, and reflection. Student feedback, developments in professional practice, emerging technologies, and continuing professional development inform how I evaluate and refine learning experiences.
The following examples demonstrate how I translate professional learning into instructional improvements and use evidence to guide continued development.
Interactive Design Studio
Revised course structure in response to student feedback, introducing clearer project milestones, expanded demonstrations, improved collaborative workflows, and more structured opportunities for independent development. Updated instruction from Adobe XD to Figma and introduced augmented reality applications.
Evidence of Growth: Subsequent student evaluations identified clearer project checkpoints, explanations, and helpful feedback as instructional strengths, demonstrating improvement in areas previously identified for revision.
Web Design Studio
Applied continuing professional development in UX/UI, accessibility, responsive design, and emerging web technologies to substantially revise the course. Instruction increasingly emphasizes human-centered design, research, information architecture, prototyping, testing, and implementation through contemporary design tools.
Evidence of Growth: Course revisions document the translation of professional learning into updated instructional methods and curriculum. Future development includes exploring AI-assisted web production while emphasizing critical evaluation and designer agency.
Game Day Design & Sports Advertising
Developed an interdisciplinary, competition-based learning experience integrating research, strategy, creative development, emerging technologies, and professional presentation. In collaboration with ART 436 Advertising Design, the course connected classroom learning with the demands of the National Student Advertising Competition and its NFL client brief.
Evidence of Growth: Student reflections documented development in research, strategy, collaboration, iteration, and presentation. The team's district-level success and advancement to the national semifinals provided external evidence of professional-level student performance. Reflection on the initial implementation identified opportunities to strengthen team structure, preparation, milestones, and workload distribution.
Unique Syllabi and Evidence of Teaching Growth Portfolio
Comprehensive documentation of substantive curricular and instructional changes across ten courses, including student feedback, instructional revisions, assessment, and reflective teaching development.
Professional Education & Knowledge Sharing
Extending Design Expertise Through Applied Learning
My educational contributions also include professional workshops that translate disciplinary expertise into practical learning experiences for audiences beyond the graphic design classroom.
Connecting Inquiry, Practice & Educational Impact
Together, these activities demonstrate an evolving approach to design education in which professional development, pedagogical inquiry, instructional experimentation, and knowledge sharing inform one another.
My continued focus is on developing research-informed and adaptable teaching practices that respond to emerging technologies, support student development, and contribute to broader conversations about design education.
